Windows Server IoT and SQL Server IoT Product Release and Licensing Information

Created Date: 2019-02-04 |  Last Modified: 2020-02-10

Applies to: Indirect IoT, IoT Distributor

Update

February 10, 2020

Microsoft SQL Server 2014 through Microsoft SQL Server 2019 no longer allowed “royalty-free” passive fail-over, as that benefit was shifted over to Software Assurance available only through Volume Licensing. When the Microsoft SQL Server IoT and Embedded Systems Product Terms for indirect OEMs was updated to add Microsoft SQL Server 2019, Additional Term 32 “Additional Instances for Passive Fail-over” was mistakenly mapped to Microsoft SQL Server Products versions 2014 and newer, as noted in the communication below the mistake has been corrected. Microsoft has agreed to provide a limited, one-time exception, to give Company’s time to comply with the updated license agreement which does not allow “royalty-free” passive fail-over for Microsoft SQL Server 2014 and newer. This limited exception will expire on August 31, 2020.

Previous Updates

Change to Indirect OEM Product Terms for Microsoft SQL Server IoT and Microsoft SQL Server for Embedded Systems

The Microsoft SQL Server IoT and Embedded Systems Product Terms (AKA Additional Terms (ATs) has been updated to reflect correct mapping of AT 32 “Additional Instances for Passive Fail-over” for applicable products. AT 32 was mistakenly mapped to Microsoft SQL Server Product versions 2014 and later; however, AT 32 does not apply to these versions of SQL Server. This issue was corrected by deleting AT 32 from the list of ATs mapped to SQL Server IoT and Embedded product versions 2014 through 2019. You can find the updated, applicable Product Terms document for SQL Server Embedded/IoT on the DPC Licensing and Programs Resource Center in the Customer License Agreement section.

These Long Term Servicing Channel (LTSC) offerings are designed to support Microsoft’s “Intelligent Edge” vision, with key new features, including built-in Azure integration and hybrid capabilities. Building on this branding change, and to extend the benefit of the global aggregation pricing model currently applied to Windows 10 IoT products, Microsoft is consolidating and simplifying the Windows Server 2019 IoT volume aggregation and expanding the number of volume tiers with this product release. This new model is designed to accelerate OEM adoption of Windows Server IoT 2019, as well as provide lower royalties as total volume grows.  As a result of these changes, the following updates apply:

The volume aggregation for previous Windows Embedded Server product offerings will not change.
