Visus scales the USA Swimming website for millions of visitors with Azure

With their expertise in Progress Sitefinity CMS and Microsoft Azure, Visus teamed up with USA Swimming to ensure a robust and scalable website ahead of the 2024 Paris Olympics.

February 28, 2025

Founded in 1994, Visus is a technology consulting firm dedicated to helping organizations streamline operations and elevate customer experiences through innovative web development, scalable cloud solutions, and actionable business intelligence. A Microsoft partner since 2009—and a Cloud Solution Provider (CSP) since 2019—Visus works closely with customers to deeply understand their businesses, help plan their strategies, and bring digital transformations to life.

“Being a partner with Microsoft helped us from the get-go,” said Michael Daoud, Founder and CEO of Visus. “We've been [working] in Microsoft Azure for several years now, and getting the Azure credits as a partner early on really helped us come up to speed and learn Azure.”

Their vast knowledge and experience with Azure made all the difference for USA Swimming in the lead-up to the world’s biggest sporting event: the Olympics.

Website-crashing waves of traffic

Based in Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA Swimming is the national governing body for the sport of swimming in the United States. With 380,000 members and 2,700 member clubs, the organization serves everyone from athletes and coaches to officials and volunteers.

For USA Swimming, their website is the go-to source for members and non-members alike to access the latest news, event details, competition results, ticketing information, marketing resources, and training tips. Previously, during major events—like the Olympic trials—the website would be inundated with waves of new visitors, resulting in repeated site crashes.

“Our website couldn’t handle the peak load and was crashing when the most people were interested in the sport of swimming in the United States,” said Jacob Grosser, Managing Director of Marketing and Communications at USA Swimming. “When the 2021 Olympic trials were taking place, [that interest] drove a lot of traffic to our site, and it crashed repeatedly. We needed help identifying the problems and fixing them.”

In the months leading up to the 2024 United States Olympic Team Trials, leaders at USA Swimming started evaluating technology vendors to get their website ready to handle the anticipated spike in visitors from the high-profile competition. Visus, with their expertise in Sitefinity and Azure, was the right partner for their challenge.

“Visus impressed us by demonstrating a deep knowledge of Sitefinity CMS and Azure. They did a proof-of-concept project for us that confirmed their proficiency and got our team familiar with theirs,” Grosser said. “The teams were able to work together without a huge upfront investment or commitment from us. We were able to take those early results to our board and executive team to show the value that a larger project could produce.”

Smooth sailing—and scaling—to the cloud

The Visus team started by upgrading the USA Swimming website to Sitefinity version 15.1, which comes with the ability to create a .NET Core application. “.NET Core provides us scalability, which is really nice for handling website traffic. We can have as many .NET Core front-end applications as we want, but we still only need one back-end application running,” Grosser explained. “Visus supported our team as they did load testing with thousands of simultaneous users, and the new site handled it without a hiccup.”

In addition to handling a sudden influx of traffic, the USA Swimming website also needed constant updates to reflect the most current news, events, and competition results, and Sitefinity offered a built-in feature that could streamline those updates—with no extra development required.

“Visus and our team don't need to do any additional work on the pages themselves because the data just flows in,” Grosser said. “We can add events, news, videos, and other details very easily at the back end, and those automatically populate to the pages of the website.”

Then, to set the USA Swimming website up for success and scalability in the future, Visus migrated USA Swimming's website datacenter from on-premises hardware in Colorado to the Azure cloud-based platform as a service in only 90 days—and just in time for the 2024 Olympic trials.

“Sometimes we can predict when peak website traffic will occur, but unexpected elevated traffic could [also] be driven by a new world record or breaking news about a popular athlete,” said Grosser. “Microsoft Azure automatically scales to handle the load, and that on-demand scalability is very valuable for us. We now have an extremely agile framework thanks to Visus.”

After moving to Azure, the USA Swimming website was well prepared for the spike in traffic that the 2024 Olympics brought. “During the 2024 Games after the Visus engagement, not only did our website not crash, but we also never even saw slowing load times,” said Grosser. “Everything was seamless, even during peak times with millions of visitors to the site.”

Teaming up for success

USA Swimming has a small internal team that handles the regular servicing of technology—so partnering with Visus freed them to focus on their actual work, while the Visus team took care of the rest.

“One of the main advantages of working with Visus was it gave us access to more developers and specialized resources that we didn't have internally,” Grosser said. “Once we got going, the relationship allowed our team to stay primarily focused on the day-to-day servicing of our existing technology while Visus helped us with the development work of the special project.”

With the Visus team fully focused on what they do best—managing the planning and process from end to end—Grosser and his team didn’t have to worry about any details falling through the technical cracks. “From a project management standpoint, it is one of the easiest projects that I’ve ever managed,” he said. “I was pleased with the upfront preparation; that led to zero surprises throughout the project and a very successful implementation.”

Above and beyond the technology

As customers like USA Swimming continue to turn to Visus for support, Visus will continue to lean on the tools, resources, and skilling opportunities through the Microsoft AI Cloud Partner Program to keep learning and growing their expertise. “With the CSP [partner] offering, you can tailor it any which way you want—which really is a big benefit not only for us but the end customer when they want to put a solution together,” said Daoud. “They can grow into the solution as their business grows. That scalability piece and breadth of cloud services—that's the beauty of Azure.”

Visus doesn't just specialize in the technical, though; they go above and beyond migrations and implementations to serve as a trusted advisor for their customers. Between their in-depth knowledge and the benefits they’ve unlocked as a CSP partner—along with the support and power of Microsoft technology—Visus equips customers for success at every stage of the digital transformation journey.

“At the end of the day, we are consultants and advisors, and we love understanding our clients’ businesses to be able to give the best solution that they need,” said Daoud. “Being [a CSP partner], having access to all the [features] in Azure, and learning more through it—I think that by itself will allow us to scale and meet other companies’ demands and needs and be able to take their businesses to the next level and provide them with a competitive advantage.”
