The requirement, Application Pinning, is being waived for the Device Configuration Document 2021 program year. This waiver is effective October 1, 2020 – September 30, 2021. Microsoft will be reviewing the strategy for Device Configuration in program year 2022 (effective October 1, 2021) and will disclose updates as part of normal disclose cycle in calendar year 2021.

Requirement excerpt from the Device Configuration Document below for reference.

Application Pinning.
  1. Aside from the placement of:
    1. Non-Microsoft Store Applications on up to twenty-five (25) percent of the Start Menu Company Group; and
    2. One (1) Non-Microsoft Store Application on the taskbar; and
    3. One (1) Non-Microsoft Store Application on the desktop,

Company may only pin Microsoft Store Applications to taskbar, desktop, and Start Menu Company Group.

For clarity, folders and files, such as .pdf or .chm, pinned to the desktop and/or Start Menu Company Group are excluded from the calculation, unless Non-Microsoft Store Applications are included in a folder, in which case those applications are included in the calculation. If website shortcuts are included, they will also be excluded from the calculation.

Notwithstanding the foregoing, Company may choose not to pin Microsoft Store Applications, or pin less than required, when Company is only pinning two or less Non-Microsoft Store Applications on two (2) medium sized or small sized tiles within the Start Menu Company Group on the Start Menu.
